My fuel tank has just started dripping pretty good. From looking up under the car, it looks like on of the top bolts holding the heat shield on to the tank is leaking. I looked up the recall and it seems that it was extended to the end of 2009. I am hoping that it was extended further, does anyone know? I will have to give a call to Volvo Monday and see what happens.
If the recall has expired, does anyone have an idea on what I should do? The tank is plastic, so I am assuming that it cracked where the bolt connects. JBWeld maybe?

One of our moderators, Phil here just had his done 2 or 3 months ago, so I'm pretty sure you'll still be good.
If the tank is leaking at the heat shield, it will be replaced.
Give them a call Monday and see what they say. If they say the recall has expired, try another...if there's one thing I've found with different dealers/mechanics, it's that they'll all tell you different things.

Did this work out for you? I recently purchased my 95 850 Turbo Wagon and upon filling it up today discovered serious leaking just back from both rear wheels on either side of the fuel tank. I'm hoping I'm still good to go as money is extremely tight and I don't want to put my family in this thing until it's fixed.
Otherwise- I wonder what a ballpark would be on paying an independent shop or maybe its something that an average Joe who is reasonably mechanically inclined can fix on his own?

I called Volvo of North America and after registering myself as the new owner of this VIN I asked about recalls and this recall #139 is still open-- it did not sound like something that will expire. I took the car to our local Volvo owned dealer (It had to be Volvo owned- not some kind of franchise) and they fixed it right up. Tank, hoses, and gaskets.
By the way- this was September 30, 2010.

I was told at the dealer that there is a ten year limitation for that recall and I was refused the opportunity to have it done. I'm in Canada, I'm not sure if the rules are different here, but now you got me thinking that maybe I'll call another dealer to verify this info.

Yeah- I can't speak for Canada, but Mine is a 95 and they didn't hesitate. I'm extremely relieved because I suspect that was the reason I got such a good deal on the car. There were a bunch of little things that were easy to fix in an afternoon, but I'm sure the previous owner was intimidated by the fuel leak-- I was too when I looked up the cost of a new tank. But I had the benefit of this forum which has already saved me more money than I paid for the whole car.
Good luck. It might be worth it to call the National Volvo number first instead of the dealer. I suspect since this is such a potentially dangerous issue they aren't too eager to deny the service. On the other hand, in the actual recall language it specifically mentions that in warm climates such as the southern US, it is a "recall" and in all other locations it is a "service call."
Given that I'm in Alabama, I guess I qualified for the recall rather than the service call... That might be the difference.
