Re: Do it yourself ABS module repair.

Post by jetzet »

After reading this thread about ABS repair i was almost convinced that i can do the fix myself. But i decided instead to go to the junk yard i try to find a use one. I found one, i installed it and both the abs and tracs lights turn off. that only last it about a week, now sometimes speedometer dies, abs , brake, and cel. light on. my questions this one do i need a software update because i have total new abs module on my car? or is it module no good too? by the way, i have a 99 V70 non-turbo.

Your new module is dead. Think of it like this, all of the modules die...so why would you replace a dead module with one that is either dead already or will die soon? Take the time and do the ABS repair. :-D

Hi! I have a 1999 Volvo S80 2.9 I have the same things happening with my car. The speedo stop working, cruise control not working, car wont start at times, and the RPM drops as well. I recently had a test ran on it and they gave me the trouble code which was p1633. They didnt know what the code was but this code have my check engine light, abs light, traction light, and brake light on. i didnt know what it was neither so i looked it up online and read about it. they was saying that it was the speed sensor which led to the ABS module. It was the ABS module that was giving the faulty signal. then i came across this cite. im pretty handy so i figured i would just try it. I did everything that was said to do and put it back together, test drove it, and the lights are still on. Im wondering if i even did it correctly or not. can anyone please help me?

I have experience with my 850s but none with the S80s. Perhaps you can get an answer if you posted in the S80 forum with a link to this thread. The entire Volvo world changed in 1999 and I am reticent to even comment on the newer cars.

Hi guys,
I have a 98 v70 with tracs. At first the tracs & ABS light would come on every now and then. The lights come on everyday now and pretty much stays on. And when I hit the breaks I get a vibration like, the petal kind of shudders I guess you would say. Then the pedal will go down a little farther. It's almost feels as if the brakes need bled. I've replaced all pads and rotors front and back. Could this be a wheel sensor or does it sound like the ABS module?

Thanks alot!

Curtis

Welcome to MVS,

In your case the symptoms point more towards dirty ABS sensors and reluctance rings.

Thanks Lee!

What cleaner should I use to clean the sensors? Also, what are the reluctance rings?

Thanks again,
Curtis

I use whatever I have on the shelf which is usually brake cleaner or carb cleaner. The reluctance rings are the sprocket shaped magnets that send the pulses to the ABS module to tell it what each wheel is doing so that it can try to figure out which brake to apply the pulsating brake pressure to. The are mounted on the hubs on the rear and on the half shafts on the front.

Hello everyone. I am a nubie here. You guys are full of great info.
I own a 1999 S80 T6, 113000 miles. I love the car, but it has a couple of problems. First, the "Service" light in the bottom right hand corner comes on when I start the car and stays on for about 5 minutes then goes out. Secondly, I replaced the abs module. After about 180 miles the "Triangular light with the skid pattern" went out. However, I kept driving down the interstate and at about 225 miles it came back on and did not go off again. How do I reset this light? All wheel sensors have been checked and are in good working condition. Thanks in advance for any help you may render.
