Timing Belt change requred - 2002 S60 2.4T AWD 196K km

Post by kdaide »

My S60 is (over) due for a timing belt change. Is this something that can be done at home without any special tools or being a mechanic or is it something that should be left for the professionals. My Dad did one on his Honda Civic and said that it wasn't too hard, but that was for a Civic not a Volvo

Does someone have good advice / instructions?

Also, does the timing belt drive the water pump on the S60
and there anything else that should be changed while I have everything apart?

Thanks, Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Its not that hard to do. Just follow these instructions and be sure to replace all of the pulleys and tensioners as well as the water pump. You don't want to do this twice. Most agree that bargain Volvo parts (Boston Volvo, FCP Groton etc)are better than the no name aftermarket parts.

Instructions included

Hello, Thanks for the T-belt and water pump instructions you posted 5 months ago. Do these instructions apply to an engine with VVT? I need to do the T-belt on my 2002 V70 non-turbo and don't want the exhaust cam (the one with the VVT hardware) to move. The same job on my 1999 was straightforward. TIA Kira

The engine described in the directions has a VVT so just follow these directions and you'll be all set.

Have fun,

hi.not sure if any one can help,we have done the head gasket on a volvo v70 2.4,run ok after start up..we noticed a leak coming from the front cam pulley(vvt),so removed and replaced cam seal.
we noticed there is a lot of play in the vvt pulley when removing,we now cannot get the vvt pulley to tighten on the cam(you can turn the cam without the pulley moving.
Any one got any ideas?
Thanks

Hi,
Very nice write-up!

Would these same replacement procedures (T-Belt and water pump on an S60 2.4T AWD) apply to a 2002 S60 2.4 non-turbo as well?
Thanks in advance.

The instructions posted in PDF files reference a special tool 999 5433 - CounterHold. Is this tool necessary or can a more commonly found tool be used? If the counterhold tool is recommended, where is a good place to purchase one?

Thanks, Kevin

Hi Kevin,

I use an impact wrench to remove the crank dampner pulley bolts.

If you are doing it by hand you can fabricate one with two strips of steel or buy the tool from Volvo . there are also generic tools on ebay etc that will work. Just remember you have the big bolt in the middle and 4 smaller around it.

Can you check if the key holding the pulley to the camshaft is in place?
Thanks

I am planning to tackle the timing belt this weekend. The timing belt replacement kit that I purchased includes new CAM seals. Should I attempt to replace these seals even if the existing ones look good?

If so, is it easy and does someone have instructions.

Thanks, Kevin
