I have a 2005 S40 T5 AWD 6 speed manual with 88k kilometers (approx 53k miles).
I'm taking this into the Volvo dealer next week but hoping someone can shed some light on my issue beforehand.
On acceleration in low gears (especially if there's extra weight, eg passengers, in the car) I often get a clunking sound coming from the rear end. Sounds and feels like the rear end diff (AWD) is slipping and grabbing off and on about every couple of seconds - if that makes any sense (I'm not a mechanic!).
Has anyone else experienced this?
It's only now that I'm checking the warranty and see there is no specific power train warranty that extends past the normal warranty like a lot of manufacturers. Grrrrrr. I did take out an aftermarket extended warranty when I bought the car (about 2 mths ago) that hopefully will cover this as I suspect it could get expensive!!
Thanks in advance for any help on this.

2005 S40 AWD - rear end clunk on acceleration??
Hi,
Someone emailed me a question if I ever got this clunk fixed.
Yes, I did.
It turned out to be an electrical component connected to the passenger side of the diff.
I just talked to the transmission shop that did the work and they can't remember the name of the component. It was something like "on demand activator".
Not sure if it was directly related to the AWD or not??
Cost was $1,000 including parts and labor. My extended warranty covered just about every part of the transmission, AWD, diff, etc except this componet.
Hope this helps.
