Transmission fluid gushing from driver side axle

Post by ghodave »

I have a 98 V70 AWD and am in Maryland.

I just replaced both front axles (purchased from FCP) and am now having some problems:
1.) Strange vibration upon take off from standing stop.
2.) Losing tranny fluid from driver side axle, not seeping but niagara falls gushing. Replaced seal today, still gushing. The gushing seems to occur after I have driven a few miles and park the car.

Help please, anyone?

Thanks in advance.

Which axles did you buy?

If you are leaking that badly then my bet is that the axle isn't fully seated. It takes a bunch to get the retainer ring to snap in place.

You have to DRIVE the axle into transaxle to get the o ring to seal into place, take and do over driving axle in until it pop's and I would pour tranny fluid in before you reassemble everything to see if it's good money.

If you did not drive the axle in, it will leak. Honestly, I would not drive it like this at all. You risk the axle popping out of the transmission completely and I don't need to tell you the bad things that will happen if that happens.

Thanks for the prompt responses. I thought the axle was in--does one have to drive it in to be sure its connected?

Just to be clear, we weren't talking about "driving" the car. We were talking about taking a short board and a 5 lb sledge hammer on the back of the inner C/V joint to get the retainer cir-clip driven into the transmission to the point where it snaps and locks.
