2001 XC70 Brake Job

Post by hornetdriver »

Hello all,

First, thanks for providing such a great database of information! I apologize if this question has been asked before. If this is a repeat question, please just post a link to the topic.

My background: I used to work on cars, motorcycles, & small engines quite a bit as a yongster. So I have a general idea of how to fix things / use tools. Currently, I have more time than $$ , so if a repair is something I can do (and save a little money), then I'd like to do so. About the car, we took great care of my (wife's) 2001 Volvo XC70. Original owners, garage kept, regular fluid changes, .... I recently replaced the spark plugs, coils and the MAF (Mass Air Flow sensor), as the wife was getting tired of the $500+ bill every time we went to the dealership (for other items that have failed in the past). She wants a new car, but I'd rather keep this one in great working condition.

Anyway, my neighbor tells me a front brake pad replacement is a piece of cake (the local Volvo dealership said my rotors are fine, I just need pads). I have a rough idea of how to change the pads; however, having a "rough" idea on something as important as your brakes does not cut it in my mind. Since I can't find a Haynes (or other repair manual) for my car, can anyone post instructions (like the "timing belt topic" - nice clear instructions)?

Also, what are your thoughts regarding semi-metallic vs. ceramic? Any difference in braking efficiency, rotor life, ...?

Thanks much!

Thanks Bill!

Anyone have a preference of ceramic over semi-metallic brake pads? Any effect to the rotor life, brake effectiveness, pad wear, ....?

Thanks again all!

Its my understanding that you will want to use the ceramic brake pads as they will create less brake dust and less of a possibility of ruining your rims. Also you will avoid the constant clean up of brake dust. Negatively they may squeal a bit but there are plenty of posts in regards to which ones are best to purchase. As for the brake job...should be a piece of cake.
They've done studies you know. 60% of the time I work, every time!
