Hey all, great forums here!
It has been brough to my attention that my sister's 240 sedan (not sure what year, early 90's) has developed a very concerning thump when turning to the right. I drove it and very much so their is a major thump when turning to the right and again when you bring it back to center. It does seem to matter how much you turn it, it'll do it. I assume something is very much moving when making the right hand turn when it should not. So I went underneath and check the status of the tie rods, checked torque on: steering rack, tie rod end, ball joint, control arm, anti swaybar mounts and the swaybar link. All were good and tight. So what am I missing here? What other parts should I check for movement (eeuroparts.com does have a scematic for this car)? Could this possibly be a worn out strut mount?
Thanks for all your help!

Jack it up, leaving the wheel on, and try and find which direction it's loose.
It could still be a vareity of things, but finding out whether it clunks fore-aft or in-out would help a fair bit in eliminating most of the suspension.
Both control arm bushings are in decent condition, correct?
It could be a strut mount, BTDT.

Went to local volvo parts and got some bushings but they did not
look like the originals. This can be a concern. Anyone run into this?

What specifically are you worried about? Fitment, ride quality, or endurance?Moe man wrote:Went to local volvo parts and got some bushings but they did not

If they're Scantech, it's quite possible that they're made of an inferior rubber... Not a problem with ride qualiy, but a problem with lasting, yes.
How exactly do they look different? Are the voids in the rubber larger? Is the rubber of a different color, or hardness?

I myself am kind of doubtful of it being the mount, from my experience they kinda groan for a while (my current car is doing that now). Mounts for control arm look good. When you say jack it up and see if its fore-aft thing do you mean pull the wheel towards the rear of the car? And for the in-out just try to shimmy it back and forth? I'll try that, but unfortunately the weather is crap.
A few other things I forgot to mention. Its only when the car is in motion (greater than 5 mph). And when it happens it doesn't feel like the car suddenly jerks to the right, makes the turn as if nothing is happening.

I mean grab the tire at 3 and 9 o clock, rock back and forth, then at 12 and 6 o clock, and rock from those points.Dubstylee wrote:I myself am kind of doubtful of it being the mount, from my experience they kinda groan for a while (my current car is doing that now). Depending on where it rocks, you can rule out the suspension, based upon where the play would show up.
