740 intermittent miss/hesitation

Post by jetmech »

My 1989 740 - 4cyl, single cam, non-turbo, bosch LH - has progressively gotten worse. I noticed almost 2 months ago an intermittent loss of power on the freeway, for only seconds at a time. It felt like something dragging. I originally attributed it to the tranny, thinking that the somewhat shaky overdrive was getting ready to let go; but eventually, as it got worse, figured out it was the engine. Having read a lot of posts about a loss of ignition, I looked there first. I don't lose the tach. It stays at 3k, not dropping to 0 as some have mentioned. I did check the plugs, they were lean - white. When it is acting up, you can shift to neutral and free rev. I believe it to be lean. Following my logic my next test is for fuel pressure, but I need to purchase adapters for my gage. I did the listen in the tank, that pump is whirring. The main pump is whirring. I changed the fuel filter. Am I chasing a gremlin? Is this possibly a relay, ecu problem? If my fuel pressure tests good, what's next? Any one have this experience? Help!
