I can't imagine pulling the engine only, it would probably be more of a PITA to pull only it. After all the only thing holding the trans in as well is the oil lines and the mount. Also maybe the axles. But that is it I think, everything else you have to remove anyway.joevolvo850 wrote:just getting ready to pull an 850 engine out. chilton says you can pull motor only without trans, but i dont see how. not enough room to clear. is it best to just pull them both?
thanks

There is enough room on the auto trans, you only have to seperate them by about an inch or two to clear the flywheel, but you'd also have to hang the trans on a support or put it on stands to keep it in the car without the engine. It's really much much easier to pull it all.
Getting set to rebuild front suspension, timing belt, water pump, RMS (slight leak), alternator (weak) on sons 98 S70. The car is home for a little while so can get the job done on the lift. Tried to download the PDF but the link leads to something else. Did the PCV a couple months ago in the dead of winter when the RMS started weeping.
Is there a way to separate the engine from the transmission by by dropping the subframe? Every place i looked pulls the engine from the top. I have a lift so raising the car is not a problem. If I pull the whole engine out to get to the RMS, I might as well change all the seals and possibly go to synthetic oil. The timing belt kit from FCP includes most all the seals.

Hey this was a fantastic write up. I have no intention of doing that, but I couldn't help but read the whole thing in awe.
The one bit I'm extra thankful for is your details concerning the Oxygen Sensor harness. I fiddled with mine for an hour on friday and couldn't figure it out. It's a 99' V70 base model... and I think the connector is different than that one (and it's even different than the 99' V70 Turbo models)... but it made me feel a bit better that I'm not the only one out there that struggled with that. So far no one has been able to tell me how to disconnect that sucker in my thread with my current car issues... and looking at the replacement parts hasn't been a big help either. But I'll get it apart if I have to feed the O2 sensor up through the tight passages and pull the harness up through the engine compartment so I can get a good look at it
Again, fantastic work. Thank you for posting this. This has much value beyond the job of removing the engine and transmission.

Just wanted to take a moment to thank you or this incredible writeup. I just completed an engine replacement on my 94 850 (219K) using your steps and pictures every step of the way. I would have never attempted this had I not found your post here.
I had one hiccup where I crossed 2 plug wires and experienced some misfire upon startup. ( I thought i had screwed up the transmission). Overall it took me about 2 months (working about every other weekend) along with plenty of IPD orders and visits to local auto parts places. Im now viewed by my buddies as an official motorhead as if I actually knew what I was doing.
Thanks again for your efforts and support to have this posted!

Wheelsup,
Great write up, but man.... please use safety shoes, working in flip-flops is big no-no.
I do not want you to get injured, I want you to write more write-ups like this one.
Thanks again

Dave that is great to hear, glad you got it running. Any issues along the way? Anything you did different that was a time saver/smarter? Feel free to add.wd64simy wrote:Matt
