Just picked up a 2000 V40 that had a seized-up motor by overheating( I suspect ) and put another in. Found that the brake booster vacuum pump was whining and very hot to touch so I've ordered another. Meanwhile after unhitching it and running the motor I've found another similar sound coming from a canister under the car just forward of driver's side rear wheel. My experience with newer cars is limited and I'm not sure what this part is and haven't been able to identify it from various on-line parts sites. Haven't found any complete drawings to help. Any information on what this is including feedback on replacing it myself, if necessary, would be appreciated.

I'm guessing it is the charcoal canister for the EVAP system. Try searching that +V40 and see if you can't find a diagram of it.

That's my fault. What I mean is, go to google or something and type in "EVAP canister +V40" The 'V40' is in there because that's what car you have.
