running 99 s70 with bad abs module

Post by nyurch »

my abs module is obviously bad. pretty much obvoiusly it's the solder joints. my dad has two other s70s and we're working on learning and basically doing the repairs ourselves.. (he's soldered before, i have not but i have good eyes) I was just wondering before next week when i plan on taking the car about an hour away if it's safe.. I know that the regular brake system will work, but what can I do to my car running the car with a bad abs module? is it possible just to disconnect it.. I know it's not safe in reference to driving without a spedometer for 5 minutes or so at a time (yeah, that's happening too) but as in brake problems am I okay? Thanks for any help/references. :) natasha

You can run that way forever as long as it doesn't set other codes.

Nothing bad will happen...the brakes will still work perfectly fine, you'll just not have anti-lock brakes. Occasionally, the speedo may stop as you've experienced. But it's not going to hurt the car in any way.

I have never owned a car with ABS before, so it would be nothing new to someone like me, but if you get in trouble, just remember not to stomp them or let up on the pedal and pump them if they lock up. You'll both stop shorter than skidding, and have control of the car

My platinum 850 has a faulty ABS module. I sometimes have no speedo.

You won't have any problems with the ABS module out, But your speedo will be out, which sucks. I did the abs repair myself a few weeks ago and wished I'd had someone else do it! I had no trouble getting it out, like many people have trouble with, but getting the box open was a PAIN. There was a guy either in this forum or another one of the Volvo forums that will advance you an ABS module for your car, and once you get you send your bad one back to him. I was going to do that but he didn't have my cars ABS at the time. If you PM me I can look up the guys email address for you. Like I said I did it myself and it works fine now, but you do have the risk of it not working when you put it back in! Good luck!

I had the ABS light on for 5 years. Finally the Check Engine light came on and could not be reset. The Dealer said the error code was pointing to the ABS control Module. I bit the bullet and found one on-line and replaced it. No problems since.

Wait, you're saying the C.E.L. went on and the ABS module was the fix?

My 99V70 has had the whole ABS issue and though I soldered everything and it appeared to work, it eventually went wonky again.

So I'm an old pro at driving without the ABS (and thus no speedo).

For my car (which if you have a base model should be pretty much the same) it was 25.5mp for each 1000 RPM (when running steady)

So 2000 RPM had me cruising (on relatively flat land) at 51mph. 3000 RPM was around 75.5.

I derived this from all the times the ABS would start working and then it failing and paying close attention there after to my RPM's when it was working again.

I've driven hundreds if not .... thousands  ... of miles without the ABS unit working consistently. No ticket no nothing.

I'm not one to tailgate (as that's pretty stupid) so I haven't needed the ABS hardly ever anyway.

Yes it can trigger a CEL for the computer not getting a signal from the Speed Sensor and a couple other things, but this can be cleared with an OBD2 scanner.
