Underlying cause of 10 error codes

Post by sua428 »

My 2004 Volvo S60 (70,000 miles) has had intermittent electrical issues its entire life. I've taken it to one Volvo dealer who reset the codes and did a software update, and another dealer who did a full diagnostic and recommended replacing the DIM (drivers information module) for about $1800. I did not have confidence in his diagnosis and declined.

The error codes are below. I don't see why replacing the DIM would fix all error codes. Maybe doing software updates of all systems could do something for me. I'd like to find an underlying cause of the problems rather than replace one system after the other only to find that the problem persists.

The error codes were:
AUM-E003 Configuration fault, Faulty configuration
BCM-0100 Communication between control units, Communicational problems with ECM
BCM-E003 Configuration fault, Faulty configuration
CEM-1A62 Communication with ECM control module, Signal missing
CEM-1D08 Control module, Internal fault
DDM-0025 Mirror motor, Signal missing
DIM-E003 Configuration fault, Faulty Configuration
PSM-E003 Configuration fault, Faulty configuration
SRS-00D5 SRS lamp, Configuration fault
UEM-0080 Rain sensor, Signal missing

Restarting the car usually fixes all symptoms except for "SRS Airbag Service Urgent" which needs to be reset by professionals. But that doesn't solve any real problem, the next flare of symptoms can be a couple hours away or several months away. Although the severity of each episode can vary and not all symptoms may occur with every episode, it just makes for a very unpredictable car.

The full list of symptoms is as follows:
"SRS Airbag Service Urgent" message
"Brake Failure - Stop Safely" message
Trip odometer reset
Time reset
"Bulb failure - Position light" message
Dashboard dies (all gauges and lights)
Electronics die (A/C, radio, power windows, power locks, power seats)
Loud thud sound
Transmission stuck in low gear (slow acceleration, engine overheats)
Headlights click on and off
Engine stalls

Similar though not exact problems can be found in the following accounts:

barrysharp's 10-phase story about 2/3 down the page

With possible solutions varying from ABS, BCM, DIM, power seat module, soldering, and sensors in these and in similar stories, I don't know which system to suspect.

Are you the original owner since new? Have you done any electrical mods to this car? is this the original cluster?
Did you unplug the connectors on the back of the cluster without disconnecting the battery?

The newer instrument clusters are car specific that have to be mated to the ECU via volvo software download, because they themselves contain a computer module. It appears that indeed the DIM is defective or the ECU does not recognize it, thus all the error codes.

Before you throw $1800 for a new DIM, try obtaining a used DIM from the wreckyard, specific for the same year model, ie '04. It might or might not work, but it should only be about $100. Good luck, and post back the fix.

I bought this car in 2006 as a lease return. I have not done any electrical mods to this car. I have never changed the cluster. I have never done any technical work on the car such as "unplugging the connectors on the back of the cluster".

I have never bought used parts for a car so it may take me a little while to find the right resources for a obtaining a used DIM, but if its only $100, I'll try it. In the meantime, could it be possible that rather than a faulty DIM it could be caused by a faulty power seat module (as written below)? Thanks.

"Apparently what was happening was that multiple fault codes for the low speed CAN communication were being issued from all modules except the power seat module. With the assistance from the Volvo factory technical specialist running OHM checks over the low speed CAN circuit it was found that the 64 OHM was within specs. They resoldered junction points 53/435 and 53/438 but low speed CAN still failed. They checked wire harness where it bends at the seat anchor and they weren't kinked. They drove the car 160 miles with the power seat module unplugged and logged no low speed CANBUS failures. Thus they concluded the power seat module was corrupting the low speed CANBUS. The replaced the power seat module and reloaded software and problem was resolved. Most of this verbage was taken from the repair invoice and interpreted by me after talking with the service technician."

Well, they Do fail from time to time but I would check all the connectors and fuses first and maybe have the dealer RELOAD the CEM.
In reality this takes about 20 minutes they may charge you an hour to do this
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

Dim won't fix any of that. You have High Speed communication problems AND Low Speed communication problems.

The two speeds never interact with eachother, it's all translated through the CEM.

You require a new CEM.

edit:

CEMs are covered under emissions warranty - 8 years or 80 000 miles.

Problems recurred, dealer ran some diagnostic, upgraded the software on the DIM and CEM. They suggested replacing the DIM, but once again, that was only a suggestion. If that doesn't work, they recommended another part. Seems like a black hole that I'm not gonna throw my money down... not unless I'm sure it'll fix the problem. I wanna replace the CEM under warranty, but they'll only do that if there are some emission-related error codes. The error codes that came up in this check up were as follows:

CCM-E003 Configuration fault, Faulty configuration
DDM-0025 Mirror motor, Signal missing
PSM-E003 Configuration fault, Faulty configuration
CEM-1A23 X-supply relay circuit, Signal missing
CEM-1A25 Relay Ext X2-Supply Signal too low
CEM-1D07 Control module, Internal fault
CEM-1D08 Control module, Internal fault
CEM-3F03 Shift lock signal, Signal too low
CEM-6C48 Transponder type, Faulty signal
CEM-1A21 Relay Ext X-Power supply, Signal too high
CEM-1A24 Replay Ext X2-Supply Signal too low
CEM-1D0C Control module, Internal fault
DIM-E003 Configuration fault, Faulty configuration
AUM-E003 Configuration fault, Faulty configuration
BCM-E003 Configuration fault, Faulty configuration
BCM-0150 Stop (brake) lamp switch, Signal outside its permitted range
PDM-E003 Configuration fault, Faulty configuration
PDM-E003 Configuration fault, Faulty configuration
PDM-0030 Rear view mirror potentiometer, Faulty signal
PDM-0032 Rear view mirror potentiometer, Faulty signal
