Turbo Control Valve Indication

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Turbo Control Valve Indication

Post by BrianTTT »

My 2000 S80 T6 engine suddenly won't run. Engine will barely start. Runs extremely rough if at all. I have a P1238 "Turbo Control Valve" indication. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what has happened and what my next steps would be?! I am looking to fix it myself. Thanks!!

Hmmm, can you give a more detailed descrption of the behavior? Is it misfiring? An any case, judging from what you have said, I'm not 100% sure it would be caused by the TCV. You can check and service the TCV using this guide:. http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/solenoids.html

The TCV is attached to the outside of the airbox with three vacuum pipes (and an electrical connector) going to it.

/edit....Kind of out there idea, but I noticed you mentioned tranny issues elswhere. Sometimes shifting issues can can be caused by a MAF going out too as well as hard starting or rough running. A duff MAF wont always generate a code though. When the engine is off, ignition off, disconnect the MAF, try and start the car and see if there is any improvement.

Found the TCV. 2 of the hoses look a little suspicious so I'm going to replace them. I decided to open a few things up (I have a severe oil leak on the back side of the engine) to make sure that the hoses elsewhere are intact. I'm also finally going to get at the seals on the Turbo oil return lines. I've read that these seals are notorious for leaking and should be fairly easy to change but I'd like to argue with the "fairly" part. The small turbo is at least accessible from below but the large turbo is impossible!!

The car starts with a little over revving (3K rpm). In 3-5 seconds it coughs and sputters, dropping to below 500 rpm (sometimes stalling) then it recovers to a mostly normal or slightly high smooth idle. Normal for again 3-5 seconds then all over again. A very rich smell from the exhaust. It will only complete this cycle of good/bad idle 3-5 times before stalling.

I had a MAF indication a month or two ago. Used some MAF cleaner on it and it cleared. Only happened once. The tranny issue is pretty real I believe. Consistent trouble codes with P0756 Shift Solenoid B performance or stuck off

I'm also getting P1171 Fuel Adaption Bank 1 & 2 but the vehicle ran ok with those before.

I'm think'n my fixer upper project is a little too gone but I'll keep banging away at it!!

Because BOTH banks are reporting adaptatin problms, Im gonna vote that the MAF is causing the rough running. Disconnect it (ignition off) and see if there is any change in the rough running. Thats said, if its been running rich enough for long enough the plugs might be carbon fouled. Pull the MAF, if no change, check a plug or two.

I saw you are getting a soloenoid error for the 3rd gear shift. That sucks :(
