2000 v70 Hesitation and P1611 Code

Hey folks,
This site has been a huge help to me in the past and was hoping to see if anyone can help me with my latest issue. My 2000 v70 (140k miles, timing belt and water pump replaced in last year) started stuttering and hesitating during acceleration this afternoon. While this was happening, the "Up Arrow" light was on.

The same thing happened about 2 years ago, only more severe - the car would actually just shut off and then go into limp mode. That turned out to be the fuel relay. No other problems until now, but the code reader at Advance Auto showed P1611. The vehicle actually ran perfectly after it had been shut off for 30 mins or so. After reading and clearing the code, I cranked it up and it immediately shut off. Tried to read it again but no codes. Then it started and ran perfectly again.

According to the official list on this site P1611 = "Throttle unit communication. Signal too high or missing." I've also seen "CAN Data Bus ETS Update Signals absent" from another source on here. Anyone able to lend me their wisdom as to what this might be? Thanks!

If the up arrow was lighting up, then I would think it would be an issue with the transmission, not the engine. I am not sure what P1611 is but the issues you are having sounds like a PNP switch issue. Next time you start have the issue, try running through the gears and see if that helps.

Thanks for the response. When the fuel relay went bad 2 years ago, the same up arrow light was coming on whenever the car was hesitating. At that time, I thought it was a transmission issue as well, but it turned out to be a fuel system issue. The transmission does have a tendency to slip every once in a while (once a month or so, while shifting between gears). The dealership said it needs a software update and fluid change.

Still unsure about the latest issues, but I did open up the throttle body last night and found pretty significant build-up. The throttle plate seemed to be stuck closed. I cleaned it well, and it seems to be running fine now. We'll see if it happens again.
