I realize it is blue book $7000, but come on should we be trading it in just cause it needs to be taken care of???

1998 XC70 Burning oil

Post by rushtonjj »

My husband hates my car. We've had numerous brake issues, window on right side doesn't go up and down, switches are breaking, power steering pump went out and the ABS unit needs replacing. That said we have done all the repairs except the windows and it is burning oil. I'd like to pay off the loan and keep it for good. So far we are only into the car for repairs at $1600. To me that is not a lot for a $30,000 car. We owe $10k on it. I realize it is blue book $7000, but come on should we be trading it in just cause it needs to be taken care of???

Things don't get better in cars, only worse.

You've got an early version of the AWD system that's incredibly sensitive to different tire sizes/wear patterns/brands and when that goes, it's big $, like a transmission.

I'd dump -- unless you're getting good at working on it yourself. Even then tho... burning oil? That's always a big job.

I'd say sell now. I had an Acura Legend which started burning oil. This was typical for honda/acuras so I kept it. Long story short, it eventually started overheating about once a month and that was if I was lucky. I had to sell it for about a grand to a mechanic and lost maybe 5 grand if I had done it earlier, plus expenses I put in like a new catalytic converter.

It's a slippery slope once a lot of things start going unfortunately. I would say sell, maybe save up and get another one if you like it that much.
