S80 Antenna Ring Replacement

Post by Spillane25 »

I'm having an intermittant problem with my S80 where it just will not start. When I turn the key lights/radio work but the engine will not turn over. I'm afraid I will get stranded miles from home one of these days. Had to leave the car at work this evening and walk home. Have a feeling when I pick it up tomorrow it will start perfectly and may not go wrong for another few weeks....

I'm figuring from my online research that I will need to change the Antenna Ring (changing the keys around does not help). I have also tried the lock/unlock trick five times with no sucess. Can anyone tell me if I need to bring the car to a volvo dealer to get this replaced and also do I need a software upgrade once replaced? Just had the ETM replaced a few weeks ago which cost nearly €1000 so kinda reluctant to pay out to dealer again if I can do this myself.

I appreciate your help with this!

my car did the same thing last night, & I too am trying to find out what to do. I could turn the key lights / radio everthing worked fine but I could not start it ( the key would not turn any further ) I was unable to start it , my son came over & wiggled the key ( I guess ) just right & it started right up. Does anyone know what this could run me money wise???

Did you try taking the keys out a few times and then start again? If it starts after having done so, chances are high it actually is a faulty antenna ring.

Replacing the antenna ring is a pretty straightforward job. The ring itself will set you back around €30 and it's about 30 minutes of work. As far as I know it doesn't need to be reprogrammed. All it does is picking up the signal from your key and send it to the ecm.
