Volvo repair manual
Re: Volvo repair manual
Thought I responded but must have not hit submit. Those are the bolts labeled #5. It was not the center but the one one the side of the pan with more space. Right next to the center one is a small hole where you can see the fly wheel and the bolt difinetly was against a moving part because the top 1/2" was ground on one side of the bolt. The bolt was 4" less the thickness of the pan would put it up about 3 1/2" on the fly. Is that about where the tone ring is? Thanks very much for your help. The filings on the sensor gives some hope. Would simply wiping it off clean it or would it have to be replaced? Do you have pdf for that?

flywheel removal PDF shows the sensor is aligned with the teeth on the flywheel - using it as the tone ring. You weren't close. You may have wrecked the sensor but thats it.
Clean that sensor -test it and let us know.

no problem - Good Luck with it.
I am excited to see what you find. If you can see the gouge in the backside of the flywheel through the inspection hole or if you remove the starter please take a picture and post it.
It sounds like this may happen to others. having apic and reading your solution will help.
Let me know if you need anything.

Well I viewed the fly wheel thru the inspection hole in the rear of engine and absolutly no marks on the fly. Removed sensor and wiped it clean, I didnt really see any filings, it did seem a litle dirty/oily but that could have been from touching engine or my hands on the way out. Anyway reinstalled, went thru the procedure, started car and for a breif minute I thought it was running smooth. It kicked down to idle and seemed to be running OK for about 30 sec and then went to a constant flutter but more like a constant miss. It definetly changed from before. I'm wondering if you think I should pull and clean again to see if it picked up any more debris. I see when you pull the sensor that it looks straight down on the teeth so that's where it has to be reading. I did notice that the fly does'nt seem to be perfectly centered with the sensor hole, do you think the fly could get bent from a 5/16 aprox. bolt? Would seem to strong for that but I don't know. Let me no what you think Thanks

Sounds fine as far as the sensor goes.
No way the bolt hurt it - the bolt didn't stand a chance as you saw. Being off center is fine. It picks up a waveform and converts it to a square wave so as long as the sensor is in the area of the teeth it doesn't make a difference if its perfectly centered. If its under the sensor anywhere its fine.
