2000 S80 T6 dies/starts/dies

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 S80 T6 dies/starts/dies

Post by neworleans »

Hello everyone,

My car broke down tonight :(
I pushed the gas pedal little hard while going 20mph and the rpm went up to 6000 and cut it, went down straight.
After going a little further, it died on me.
I started it and it died again.
I started and pushed the gas to keep the rpm above 1000 and put it in Drive and drove to the volvo dealer.
It died on me a couple of times at the lights and I had to start it and push the gas pedal again to keep the rpm above 1000.
I finally made it to the dealer and parked there.

Could this be something I can fix myself?
The dealer opens up on Monday.
I have 2 days to try things that you may be advising to check or replace.

I appreciate for any help.

Try checking the hoses/tubes from turbo to the intake manifold. Possibly one came loose because of the high pressure at 6000rpm.

Too bad. :( Try to check them really good, there might be a tear in one of them which you don't see or notice when just looking at it.

Did the geartronic shift fine when you drove the car to the dealer? Any warning lights or messages in the dash?

Hello mates,

I had my car checked and the mechanic says it is the air mess meter. i checked fcp website for price and bosh brand air mess meter is 200 bucks. then i went to ebay and found a bunch from 60 bucks to 120 bucks. where should I buy it from?
I need your advise.
Also, how big is this job? easy to replace?
Thank you.

Only buy the original Bosch, the "fake" ones really don't work, unfortunately. I've heard too many stories of people who tried them, but none actually worked. I have a used one at my place (replaced it because of a bad temper of my T6 at low temps, but it seems that wasn't caused by the amm) but I think it's not worth shipping it to the US from Europe.

It's really very easy to replace. About 5 minutes work and you only need a screwdriver and some kind of inbus tool (not sure which size though).

would you recommend buying a used one in grade A (less than 60K) from car-part.com?

I'm not sure, really. How much would you have to pay for it? And does it come with warranty? If it's above 100US$, I would buy an original one. Ditto if it comes without warranty.
