If you unbolt the A-arm or Control Arm at the subframe you don't have to mess with the ball joint at all. We tried this recently and it did prove to be the more painless method. Plus you don't tear up the boot on the ball joint this way.

There is a very good post on this board, with pictures, on removing the engine. One subsection is on removing the axles. It shows, with pictures, the unbolting the Control Arm method you mention.
