2004 S60 P0600 code leaving mom stranded

Post by georgeleedom »

I just posted a question about a P0600 code on my mom's '04 S60. It leaves her stranded on a regular basis and she's had no luck getting the problem fixed permanently.

I am hoping to get the problem resolved and then sell it so I can get her an S70. I know it's an older car, but I believe she can see out of it better, it's more reminiscent of her 740 GL, and it's a bit smaller for getting in and out of the garage. I also feel a bit more claustrophobic in her car - maybe I'd get used to that, but it seems somewhat cave-like in there.

And no offense, but compared to my S70 GLT, her car feels like driving a wet rag.

It has the base engine, but is loaded and only has 23,000 miles (My mom's in her mid eighties). Unfortunately, she is the stereotypical little old lady with the little yappy dog that goes everywhere. The seats are not torn, but badly scratched-up and cracked. He scratched up the windows so bad I had to removed the tinting.

I know the car will need about three thousand in cosmetic repairs - she had a side swipe accident that doesn't look terrible but hit just about every panel on the left side.

My question is whether I can get enough for it to pay for the repairs and purchase an S70 that is completely reliable. I spent $3,800 for mine (105k) and probably had to put another $2-3k into it: tires, front suspension, did the timing belt, brakes, etc.

I welcome any and all ideas on what it's worth, where to sell it, where to buy an S70 ( I got mine on Craig's List). Whether I'm completely mad and should just fix the thing for her, if an S40 is a good alternative... I'm kind of at a crossroads here and I live too far away from her to be worried about the reliability of her car.

Thanks,
George

I'd take another stab at getting the problem fixed on the S60. Perhaps you haven't found that one good indy Volvo mechanic nearby who can help.

S70s are so old now it means you're gambling... "better the devil you know than the devil you don't".

I'd suggest giving her your S70 if you're going to go that route, then getting another for you, where you can deal with the "shakedown" and stress testing of a new used car.

My 03 S60 had a hard starting problem for the last 2 months. Takes a lot of cranks before it would start. Many suggested
replacing check valve at the fuel pump, or fuel pressure sensor. Dealer wanted to run their diagnostic machine to pinpoint the prob. for $815. Didn't replace anything and finally decided the other day to clean the MAF, MAP sensors, cleaned the throttle body by spraying carb cleaner on a pc. of cloth the wiping the inside of t.body. Removed a lot of black stuff. Disconnect and reconnected all elec'l connections and slightly pulling on wires to ensure no loose wires. Started the car and presto, instant start. It's been starting good for the last 2 days and hoping it would stay that way. It drives and pulls like it's brand new even though it has almost 83K miles on it. This could be a lifetime keeper.

It's amazing what mucking around the engine bay will do.

finally went to Volvo. State law in NY if car is less than 8 yrs old must replace emissions related on their dime. Put in a new ECU did cleaning as per "Igel513". So far so good. Gave car back to Mom and picked up my S70 I had lent her while dealing with this... Battery dead and car in limp mode. Whatcha gonna do?
