It sounds like a couple of guys have figured out how to fix the stalling problem...check that thread again. Something about a fuel relay and some other things.

Also, go visit your local district attorney (or the district attorney in the town you bought the car from). This mechanic has pulled a fast one and even if he hasn't he owes you a higher level of service than a normal private party car seller. A court would considered him an expert since he is a mechanic and will hold him to a higher standard. He needs to give you your money back. Don't fall for the old 'I will fix it for free'. He can no longer be trusted. Contact the state attorney general and whatever state mechanic licensing board there is. They want to know about these things. But definitely visit your local district attorney because he/she is the one who is suppose to be there to help protect you from guys like this. And don't tell anyone that he might have sold you a lemon; he DID sell you a lemon. People who act honerable deserve the benefit of the doubt; jerks like this deserve to be guilty until they can prove their innocense. Oh ya, see if there are any attornies around who do charity work for single moms. Nothing is more powerful than an attorney contacting a bad vendor. Also, in my part of the country there is a couple of consumer reporting segments of the news; "7 on your side". Contact your local news channels and find out if they have the same. He will probably change his tune quickly if he things he is going to get bad publicity. Your offer to trade cars with his wife was brilliant and I would mention that to everyone you talk to. If it were me I would keep your car until I could find the problem or offer you your money back if there was nothing wrong because you were obviously crazy and with nothing wrong to the car I could easily resell it.

If you are going to go to a new mechanic print out that long arse thread about stalls so that the mechanic can take a look at it. I am pretty sure the solution is in there but we will have to see how many more people it works for.

Sorry for the choppy (and poorly spelled) e-mail but these kind of people drive me nuts AND I am about to attemtp to do some work on my new 1993 850 GLT for the first time and need to get going.

take care and good luck. I know all these suggestions mean time and effort on your part but it will be worth it in the end and above all else you need a safe car for you and your kids. I love my new Volvo and hope you haven't been burned out on them.

feel free to contact me off the list you need any more help.

Good idea on the stalling thread but here in Georgia it is "Caviat emptor" (let the buyer beware) even with the dealerships on used cars. It is "as is" unless it is spelled out in a contract.

gentlemen start your volvos, the answer is..........the relay, that each of you so kindly helped me to figure out(i'm still pissed @ MY volvo), so where do I get one & how much more $$ will this set me back? Does this mean my a/c will act normal after this fix or am I looking at a whole new topic??? Honestly I think I will just get the car repaired either at home w/ help or pay ANOTHER mechanic, not the asshole, & then put my volvo up for sale, this whole situation has left me feeling very untrusting of MY volvo, keeping that car would leave me in a state fear & insecurity each time I got in it. Also with my recent change in lifestyle due to a divorce, my wallet has decreased in size dramatically & the extra $$ is no longer available. Any suggestions on a dependable car??? Not a Saturn!!! For my friend the asshole mechanic, well lets just say I'm one of those overly protective moms & as far as I'm concerned he knew all along what it would take to fix my car & also sold me a car he knew he would make more $$ off of(trying to fix it) & the way I look at it he put my babies in danger on purpose just to make a buck! Yes I'm a little woman in size, but now I'm pissed off & he will regret( 1-stealing my $$ & 2-putting my kids in danger each time I put them in that car) for the rest of his life, I just took it out of "SPORT" mode, & I flipped on the BITCH switch. Just a little something I added aftermarket to MY volvo.
Thanks guys let me know what to buy now........

Try Ebay for the relay or ask White850Turbo up there.

I would still check the timing belt though and the accessory belt, because if it breaks or is worn out, horrible results can still occur. If it checks good, no need to replace.

Well truth be told, I haven't bought an American car since 1978. Bought a Toyota Corolla wagon 5-speed manual in 1981 and haven't looked back on Japanese. Gave it to my sister in 1991 with the original clutch in it at 147k miles. Tires, brakes and a water pump only. My only slip-up? I bought my 1994 Volvo 850 in 1998 over a 1991 Lexus LS 400 cause I couldn't quite get the seller to finance for me (yes finance). Still kicking myself over that one and why I frequent here a lot. So even I am ready to reconsider American cars at the new consumer-friendly prices especially since the Saturn project I read was GM's attempt to start fresh in the Japanese car-making paradigmn!
