I have a 1990 740 GL which was not well cared for before I got it. It's having some difficulties which I am having a lot of trouble diagnosing.
First, and the longest standing problem is the transimision (Auto). I have seen others here with the same problem but I wasn't exactly clear on the solution. It simply won't shift into 4th. All other shifts are very hard and the transmission doesn't disengage while you're coasting, the RPMs just hang at a level appropriate to your speed. I've gone to a trans place and they say it's internal in the transmission and they want $140 just to drop it out and look at it. Anybody have any ideas? Also, if I replace it, what is the model number of the tranny? What other cars might I find the same one in if I go tp a scrap yard?
Second problem, and actually more annoying is that the car just won't start sometimes. It turns over easily but won't fire. Ocasoinally, it will start, run for a sec then die again. I suspect fuel delivery. I just changed the fuel filter and had some bad lines replaced on the fuel pump. Could it be the injectors or something?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I think I can help you with your inconsistent starting problem. Please do a search of this forum for key word "kmaniac" and view my postings on the subject of the fuel system. Let me know if you have any questions.
I am not that familiar with the automatic transmissions installed in the 1990 model as they may not be exactly the same as the automatics available in my 1986. However, the 1986 was available with two different styles of automatics. One, called the ZF 4HP, is a four-speed automatic with lock-up converter. The other , called the AW 71 is a four-speed automatic, where 4th gear is provided by an integrated overdrive unit. The one in my car is the ZF. I understand the AW has a separate overdrive switch that the ZF does not have. I have read numerous posts in this forum about certain transmissions failing to shift into overdrive. You will need to determine the type of transmission in your car and seek advice from a transmission specialist experienced with Volvo's.

Actually all AW70/71 transmissions have lockup capability.
The AW transmissions have a separate switch to turn off the 4th gear, many things can go wrong to leave you in third gear, including the electronic solenoid, and even the button itself...Lock-up
(GL, GLE models)
With the gear selector in position D (Drive) the lockup device disengages the torque converter at speeds above approx. 47-56 mph (75-90 km/h). It provides lowered engine speeds and improved mileage.
The lockup engagement may be noticed as an extra upshift when accelerating.

For your second item:
Anyone with a stalling problem needs to look at the fuel relay first..this can be the cause of stalling and is an easy fix. Illiminate this as a potential first before spending money elsewhere. Description of issue can be found on this forum in many locations..also Swedish Bricks has a dedicated section just on the relay with photos.
