re: 2006 s60 2.5t w/geartronic 59k miles...mid pitch whine seemingly coming from something belt driven. varries with acceleration-deceleration

Serpentine tensioner, idler pulley, PS pump, or alternator. You will have to try to narrow it down yourself, but all of those can be common suspects. A wooden rod or plastic pipe put to each of the components will help you narrow down the sound.
