Wiper won't work

Post by iwoman »

Hi All,

I have a volvo 850, 1996, and the wiper on the driver's side does not work:

it sometimes goes slower than the one on the passenger side, which causes a lash eventually, and when it doesn't go slower (or stop), it doesn't stay on the windshield (lifts towards the end).

I have removed the wiper arm and saw that the metal base hase 2 things wrong with it: it's has a soft surface (maybe that's ok? ) and the rubber cushion that goeas around it, is worn and broken..

What should I do? Help please! :(

it sounds as though there's some slippage between the wiper motor post and wiper assembly. i would first check to make sure the top nut is tight- it's a 13mm. if it is, i would remove the wiper assembly to see if the splines in the wiper assembly are worn (it's a softer metal than the wiper post, so it would most likely wear faster.) if it's substantially worn, you may need a new wiper assembly.

as far as the "lift" at the edge of the windshield, try this fix.

The wiper arm post is tapered and the only hold is the pressure applied by the nut attached to the end of the post.

Go ahead and buy new wiper arms and replace the ones you have. I believe it cost me about 80 bucks for both of them. I had a similar problem, so that should help.
