How do I read the mileage with a broken odo gear?

I just bought a 96 850 turbo wagon and I didn't realize it had a broken odometer gear until after the sale on the drive home. The last known mileage is 129,xxx and it did have the 70k service according to the maintenance log. Presumably with the timing belt but I haven't checked the engine for a sticket yet. Edit: It has a timing belt sticker but there is no mileage written or it has faded. I will presume it is from the 70k service because that is the last in the book. I also bought a odo gear.

The "service records" show that there was an estimate for a timing belt replacement but I have no idea when that was. The 129,xxx mile reading shows up on records back to 09 and the first different record is in 2005 with 91,795. So the odometer gear broke somewhere in that 4 year span. I will try to contact the previous owner and ask when the odometer broke but if I can't - is there a way to read the mileage in the computer?

I have a vagcom interface and will be getting the volvo software to work on it, just need to know where to go if it is stored. I would presume it is since the trip computer is working.

Do I need to do the full-boat $200 kit that IPD has or can I just replace the belt? Money is sort of a factor but I would rather do it right once. Edit: I just bought the whole kit.

Also, the shifter lockout doesn't disengage when I put my foot on the brake - is this commonly in the shifter assembly or the brake switch on the pedal?

:( I have a 96... I'm reloading xp on my diag laptop and will see if i can pull it from the obd2 port.

I also bought a water pump just to be on the safe side.

A shop with VIDA can read it but most of them don't know how to get to the proper menu. The same applies to the stealerships. Sadly, you can't do it on your own on a later model 850.

It can be any of several things. The two things that have done it on my car were 1) the ignition switch used to have to be twitched after the car was started. Turned back slightly, all the electrics would work. and 2) the brake switch needed to be pushed up slightly.

It could also be the shiftlock microswitch, but I would do that as a last resort because the console is a bit annoying to remove.

If that kit has a Scantech tensioner in it (someone's does, can't remember whose), throw it AWAY and buy a genuine tensioner.

I bought the ipd kit, all oem, right?

Just installed the vol-fcr software... Doesn't look terribly useful except to read codes and reset the service light...

These kits contain all the mechanical parts needed to replace the timing belt. Tensioner, idler bearing, belt, etc. All the parts are OEM brand components (no weird aftermarket stuff.)
Cool. Yeah, you're good :mrgreen:

I downloaded that software, but my wonderful computer just refused to open it, so I'm not entirely sure what it can/can't do.

I'll let you know tomorrow how it works. Too bad it isn't a little more comprehensive like the vag-com software is.

This post shows how to rig up blink codes on obd2 sockets like in the 95 and older cars. I just so happen to have a few obd2 sockets and some bits and pieces to make up a blink scan tool.
