Wax Recommendation?

Post by FlyingVolvo »

I'll be happy if it makes the car look good, but what I'm really looking for is one that will protect it through snowstorms, ice, rain, dust and dirt for around a year. So essentially a good wax with the emphasis on "protection" and "durability" with the "show room shine" being not such a huge priority.

Plan of action: Wash > Clay Bar the hood at least > Wax everything.

Any good recommendations? I've been looking at Meguiar's, Nu Finish, and Mothers.

Wax flakes off the vehicle within the first week. You need a sealant. Asking it to last a year is a lot to ask. I believe only NuFinish and some other specialty sealants make the claim that they can last for a year.

NuFinish. Despite their cheesy commercials, it works!

Thanks guys! I think I'll try the Nu-Finish. I'll probably have an opportunity to wash/wax again in December, but I still want something really durable.

I guess coming from where I am (Manila, Philippines), nothing really lasts 3 months, let alone a year. So far I've been happy with Car-Lack68 products. It does not streak nor leave residue, just apply and wipe off. In the States, I think it's repacked and called Klasse. Might be work looking into.

Alrighty, so I got busy today! Washed the car then used the Turtle Wax Ice clay bar kit, followed by Nu Finish.

I was debating between the different clay bars kits. I chose the Turtle Wax one because it had a good looking "Liquid Clay" prep. In the end it worked very well! The prep fluid was kind of what you'd expect a "liquid clay" to be and helped to remove the bulk of contaminants. Then the actual clay bar with the lubricant finished off the crud. I was left with such a nice smooth surface, it's crazy! The only problem is that it did really make some small chips show up that were hidden by some embedded dirt.

After that I did two Nu Finish coats on the car (three on roof and hood!). Like any wax/polish, don't use too much or it's a little more annoying to get off. Once left with a light haze, it is very easy to get off. The shine is not quite as brilliant as some other waxes, but it definitely "feels" durable, like there is actually something substantial between the paint and the elements. Only word of caution as some others have said, don't get this stuff on the trim. It leaves a white haze nearly impossible to get off. I'd have some Forever Black handy to patch up any white spots you get on there. I was too lazy to be that careful...

Overall, I'm pretty happy! I'm hoping this work will last through the first part of the winter, until late December or January. We'll see!

I just clay-barred my 850 a few day's ago with the Turtle Wax Ice Clay Kit. I am absolutely in love with it. (Now, I've never used a clay bar before, so the shear excitement at a shiny Volvo was a given). After I did my 850, I did my best friend's 240 (which sits under trees 24/7  and that took a good part of the day to do, but it was well worth it). I'm not a spokesperson for Turtle Wax or anything but I followed with their Ice Polish and WOW, they sure look good together. I'll have to try the NuFinish wax...Sounds like a good investment for a harsh winter. I wonder what it would look like on top of the clay bar and polish? Hmm...I might have to experiment

I live in Cleveland and in the winter it's hard to keep my car clean. But when we do have a day that's above freezing, I'll wash the car, wait for it to dry (somewhat) then I'll wipe it down with Mequiar's ultimate detailer. You don't have to wipe it off perfectly for it to work. You also might want to look for a similar product made by 3M, which is by far the BEST product I have ever used...

Hi guys ! I am normally a Meguiars fan particularly their leather cleaner/conditioner. Recently I was offered a can of RGS Labs FW1 cleaning wax which I have not seen on the South African market before and as it is produced in the States wonder whether you guys have any comments on this product. It wasn't cheap but on their website I see it sells for US $20 [about Rands 140] but on the deal I got it cheaper than that. Please don't tell me I bought a lemon.
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most.
