2000 s40 smoking heavily

Post by tbornjr »

2000 s40 180xxx miles. The story as I understand it is they drove to florida ran it low on oil and when they filled it back up it smokes heavily a greyish with blue tint smoke. I briefly looked at the car and it smoked right from startup and heavily for fifteen mins or so then calmed down a lil bit till you reved the engine. I removed the oil fill cap and pulled the dip stick noticeing no smoke and what seem as normal pressure being emitted for a car of that mileage.
I told her I would stop by again this week when I was more informed. Its a dear friends niece and she is debating on repairs or sale as is. I know I should remove the intake hose and check for oil, but besides that its on a neighbor hood street where I can only do limited work before towing to my garage.
My ?s are
1)Is there a few simple tests to condemn the turbo I can do onsite with out jacking up the car or spending more than 30mins? Its in the 90s and very humid right now. Any amount of time out there and you look like youve been swimming.
2)is it difficult to remove and install? for a mildly talented individual?
3) i understand the oil return line can get clogged, but if its underneath then inspection is not likely so can you temporaly interupt oil supply and see if the smoke stopps? I figure if it needs rebuilt/replaced there would be no harm.
thanks in advance

Dude, I drive trucks and know the symptoms of a blown turbo.

1 when idleing there is smoke
2 when you put your foot down, there is a load of smoke
3 distinct lack of power
4 intercooler fills with oil

any of this sound familiar?

if so... BLOWN TURBO

Forgot to mention that the fact they ran it out of oil would mean that its more than likely that the turbo siezed at this point!
My moneys on the turbo...
