First make sure you got the latest and greatest in software updates...then double check your ATF quantity via the dip stick. If both come back positive, then a drain and fill with new fluid might help with the shifting.

Your 02 requires any fluid meeting the "JWS 3309" specification, so this can be: Mobil 3309, Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, Amsoil Universal ATF, Toyota Type IV, or any other fluid with that specification listed on the bottle.

I'd definitely do a few drain & fills to see if that helps, if not... then sadly your tranny (known bad year) is probably starting to pack it in...

Thanks Ed,
how much fluid is required, and what about the software update?
I asume that must be a dealer only item.
It seems like the car car works ok in the manual shift mode it only screws up in slower traffic between shihts in the automatic mode.

You need about 12 Quarts to do a complete flush, there are guides posted on this site.

You should also look into the B4 Servo Cover...

Yep, the dealership ought to do the software update and it is very important to have the latest and greatest; after you get the software situation taken care of I would do a drain and fill... here is a link

I found that Toyota Type IV is the most accessible and affordable fluid; I put 10,000 miles on my V70 without a skip before I sold it.

There is only one software it will take.
All software downloads are superceeded by the latest one, VIDA won't allow anything else.
If you say it shifts OK in manual, I would definitely try new software, a flush at 59K and reset all the adaptions.
Have them also look at the B4 servo and good luck, it may work

I would like to thank all you people, (JRL,Jan,CanadianS60 and Ed Sykes ) for all the info.
I have checked out the links and procedures you have given me but still have a few quick questions.
It looks like the bad trannys where built from March of 01 thru December of 01 with chassis breaks between 036000-067100.
My car is close, 067100 trans built in January of 02.
Although not within the recall range, but very close, do you guys feel a removel and inspection of the B4 cover is necessary?
Also, VADIS (volvo aftersale diagnostic information system) is a dealer only item for me based on the cost of the CD.
So would a dealer run this update only without getting the servo cover and tranny work?
Could I also do the flush and servo work first and if the results were good omit the software update?
The reason I ask is because I hate my dealer and will only go there as a last resort.
Is my problem a last resort?

Thank you all again

Mitchell

Yes, replace the B4 servo cover, is only a $20 part. I believe '01 and '02 trannies used the servo cover with the pinch welding. The part was revised and '03 and newer trannies came with the improved servo cover. Even if is not the problem now, it will prevent the problem later.

My '01 V70 T5 tranny was outside of the chassis numbers range you mentioned, and the servo cover was defective. I replaced the cover, reset the adaptives and refreshed the fluid and the tranny is shifting much better.
