940 se turbo cut out problem......

Post by Ben Joyce »

Firstly I'd like to say hello to everyone, as I am new here  . I am also a new Volvo owner and have very limited experience of cars in general.... so please bare with me if I don't explain things too well. I will try my best.

My Volvo is a 940 se turbo, it's a 93' K reg.... and apart from this problem it's in what consider to be excellent condition. I've had it about 2 months and it's done 150,000 miles.

Here is the problem:

First of all there is a loss of power, by that I mean that depressing the throttle has no effect at all. A few seconds later, the engine actually stalls and all the dash lights come on, as you would expect, the power steering also goes dead. At this point I pull over, the car will not start immediately (although it does turn over). However, If I wait approx 2 minutes the car will start as if nothing has happened, every time, and will be ok for the a day or two until the same problem occurs again. This problem seems to occur at any time and without any pattern, I can be doing any speed at all and at be at any point of the journey.

I have just purchased the Haynes manual, and will be giving it a full service next week, with the help of my father..... who is incidently, much more car-minded than I am.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben.

Hello Ben!
I have my 244 for a 6 years, since that time I made a lot of things for my car by myself. If you are interested I can try to help you from the 244 point of view - just drop me a line on my e-mail.

Type in 'stall' without the quotes in Keywords and you'll come up with a few leads. Also try any other relevant keywords. Sorry, don't have any answers myself.

The most likely candidate for intermittant stalling on these are 3 things (I had a car that had all 3 go wrong @ once... what a nightmare) 1st, the FI relay. As they get old, the solder holding the relay to it's board cracks, causing an intermittant failure of the FI and ignition system. Relatively easy to pull out and visually inspect. # 2, is the flywheel sensor. On a 93, it's at the 12:00 position on the transmission bellhousing. Little black plastic thing on a wire. Held in place w/ a single 10mm bolt. It's a magnetic sensor that tells the ignition the engine is still spinning, an to continue giving it spark. #3, which i'm not sure the 93 still has (89-90 does, not sure about yours) is the ignition amplifier. It's about the size of a credit card, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick with a wiring harness going into it from the bottom. On the 89-90, it is on the fender over the battery (on the driver's side). A 93 may have the rex/regina ignition & fuel setup, and not have the ignition amplifier, but i'm not 100% sure about that. But #1 and #2 are a good place to start.

Well, I paid volvo to change the flywheel sensor and it cut out on me the very next day. This saturday actually. Any ideas. I've had the throttle body cleaned also.

Need help accessing the relays, I can see them behind the ashtray but how do I access to inspect. Also what about the other items ignition amp and Hall sensor.
