Great tip! BTW, just got off the phone with the local Toyota dealer - $5.50/qt, will take returns if I pay by CC. Then called the local Volvo - there I have to buy it by the gallon - at $77.00 per and no returns! I was sorely tempted to tell him about Toyota's price, but thanked him and hung up. And these guys wonder why I take the car to the local independent?
Edit: Update - stopped by the local parts place (Carquest) for a funnel with tube and saw the Toyota Type IV on the shelf and they quoted me $4.40/qt, no returns, but for that price I don't mind running back for a few qts if I'm low. 8 qts + funnel + tax ran me $40 US. Dropped the protector tonight to scope out the situation, the real fun starts tomorrow...
Edit 2: If anyone is interested, the funnel has a clear plastic tube with a black fitting on the bottom that fits right into the dipstick tube, almost locks in. The PN is Carquest 30067, and it is called a plastic transmission funnel. My contribution to the cause...

I was reading your "2001 V70 2.4T ATF simple Drain and Fill..." and let me first compliment you on how you posted this. Instructions, pictures, etc... Fantastic! Next, I have a "Transmission Service Required" light on and NO transmission problems as far as I can tell. I took it to my local "ripoff" Volvo dealer and within a few hours I was told to either replace the trany or buy a new car. I have attempted to reset the light several times and... nada! Now, I am wanting to do a drain and fill and I am by no means a mechanic but to my surprise I have (several times) been able to repair/acomplish things in cars. I have noticed though, I cannot get to my dipstick in the V70 and by the looks in your pictures it seems as if I have to raise the car and then drop the engine cover in order to get to the yellow dipstick. I am inclined to doing this myself as it seems pretty straight forward. On a scale from 1 - 10 (10 being the hardest) where would you place this at? Also, did you have any lights on before doing this and if so, did they go away after doing this? I bought this car around 7 months ago (3rd owner) and very dissapointed. I am really worried this car will now cost me thousands of dollars in either repairs or losses.
Any help at this time will be truly appreciated. Thanks in advance. P.S. I will also post this on the forum for additional info from others.

Is a trip to the local Volvo dealership the only way to update the software? They always want to pull a full physical and other maintenance functions that I would rather do myself!
And of course they will want to sell a new tranny!
I would imagine that once the software is updated, the "Transmission service required" light will go out.
I've been able to get to the tranny dipstick by inserting a short piece of 1/2" PVC down there and moving the lower radiator hose over far enough to get to the stick.. great engineering on Volvo's part! Let's see, you have to check the level while the car is running and is up to temp.. Wear your fire suit!

Hi I"m Tim; just signed up and hoping to gain useful tips.I am not so tech saavy, please bear with me while I learn to navigate the site.I have a 2002 xc70 a/t thats been giving me grief in the tranny dept.I saw this post, caught my eye.I have had the tcm software update, worked well for about 1 month/1000km.now we are back to slippage, hard downshifts and going into neutral when foot is off the pedal.Thought for sure it was going to drop right out the bottom a few times.so now the dealer is trying to sell me a new trans;[good luck with that]!...I did draw off about 1.5 liters of fluid,"it was nasty brown"...added back some new fluid and saw alittle improvement.so I"m hoping draining and refilling a couple or three times may salvage the gearbox. I"m just wondering if a trans.shop could do a better job;will they be able to flush and clean out the tourque converter? I would sure appreciate any and all thoughts and opinions...thank you....Tim...

hi it"s Tim[timbit],like I said, I"m new and no technical wizard. I assumed my e-mail adress would automatically be displayed with my post;still not sure,so here it [email protected] .....thanks
Tim,
You can do it yourself. Get a case of Toyota Type IV ATF, or Mobile 3309, or another JTS 3309 compatible ATF . Then drain the ATF , you should get about 4 quarts. Add the same amount of new fluid. Check the level and drive the car. Maybe a week later, do that sequence again. Then again . By now you should have some pretty good looking ATF in your system. It'll probably cost about $50-60 .
