Every time I read about that I can't help but think of this
It was a test (failure) of that system in front of the press. I've read the translation, but I forget the details of what went wrong. It was a stupid mistake on the part of the testing team if I recall correctly.
Whatever the case, it's a pretty neat technology. Volvo has nearly perfected the safety of the occupants, now it's time to aid pedestrians.
