Cam sensor on 2002 s60

Post by shamrockontour »

While driving home the other day the car just died, I had it brought to the shop. They diagnosed it saying it needed new spark plugs, and new ignition coils, and a new cam sensor ($765). I had just changed the spark plugs, all 5, and an ignition coil the previous week (thank you forum) and it had been running great. Where is the cam sensor located? Can I replace it. The shop wanted $465 to replace it. When I got on line and saw the aprt was $60 and they wanted $300, I decided to have it towed to my house.
Could I replace it myself?

Its on the transmission side of the motor on the end of the cam. It takes 10 minutes to change unless your oil seal is leaking. Then it takes 40 minutes to replace the seal and sensor.

Try these

You want the rear cam seals in the procedure if needed

According to the pdf diagram I need to remove the pipe betwwen the air cleaner. But the cam sensor sits on its own on top and comes out easilly. Do I really need to disconnec the air pipe. Also, some online stores charge $55 for a cam sensor, while others with all sotrs of wires attached are charging $180. The wires to the electrical connection going to the sensor on my car are enclosed and then run in to another line that goes off under the engine. Should I just replace the sensor?

I never take off the intake tube unless it gets in the way of replace the seal (only replaced when needed).

I would replace the sensor only. As you pictured its easy to get to. Not sure what you meant by attached wires unless it comes with a replacement pigtail. I replace the sensor only, unless I diagnose a wire failure.

You should pull it out now and check and see if you need a seal. I would be working on cars more today but its 100 degrees here.

Thanks, I could not afford to have it done at the shop, so I had it towed to my house, that was last Friday. I paid them $78 for the diagnosis. When I went to look at it Saturday, they had left a box of bolts on my passenger seat, the engine cover off, and all the ignition coils disconnected. I did not mind that so much as I knew where evrything went, having done this work 2 weeks ago, but there were 2 large bolts left over and I dont know where they go! They were closed until today. After a little sparring they actually agreed to tow it back to their shop, reattached everything (I think), and retowed to to my house!
I have ordered a new cam sensor on line at myvolvopartsonline ($45). I turned the engine on to see what the message would be. It said "engine system service urgent" They told me that this was the message they got which led to their diagnosis regrading the cam sensor. I hope that the new sensor works......my 16-year old son is getting fed up with me driving his truck to work! Thank you for all your help.

The cam sensor came in finally (10 days), I replaced it ($49), it was very easy (5 minutes). The mechanic wanted $465! Well it still ran very rough, like it was misfiring. The mechanic said when I brought it to him first that the ignition coils in cylinders 2 and 3 need to be changed and the cam sensor. I replaced both ignition coils, but it still runs like it is miss firing. There is no error message anymore, at least there wasnt when I let it run for 2 or 3 minutes. Also it seems to rev by itself, and wouldnt rev past 2000 rpm when I put my foot on the accelerator. What could that be? Help!!!!
