STC button/CD player questions

The STC button in my '01 V70 T5 does not seem to do anything at all. I've read the manual, and it states that if held for one second or so, that the STC is turned off and is indicated by the light in the instrument pack. Do these buttons tend to fail, or am I doing something wrong? The LED in the button is illuminated, but the button does not seem to have any effect.

Secondly, the CD player in the dash is temperamental at best. Sometimes it works (plays CD's), and sometimes it does not. It will always accept a disc, and looks like it is trying to read one, but will most often not play. Bad unit??
