My car stalls, rpm fluctuates & hesitate to start mornings

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

My car stalls, rpm fluctuates & hesitate to start mornings

Post by Bibicha »

Hi,

I have 1999, S80 T6
I change my alternator and right after my car hesitate to start every morning.
I had cylinder 6 firing up before the alternator change, but starting was normal.

Then on day, my car didn't start. I towed it the following day and once at the mechanic, it started normally.
I killed the battery trying to start it. I changed the cylinder 6 and all the spark plugs. That was a partial tune up.
That should have made my car run smoother. No at all, the check engine came back a couple of days later.
The car's rpm fluctuates. I still feel the stalling. Most importantly, It hesitate to start. I have to press the gas for it to start.

Also, right after my alternator was changed, I get the battery signal. I press the gas or once it's warm, it goes off.
I notice that if I start my car with the door open, it comes up more often.

I am a woman and I am not sure if I am taking advantage of :-(. Not to mention, that my SRS Service is on (since the alternator).

I appreciate your feedback and replies

I'm having similar kind of problems. After having replaced a few parts (lambdasensor and MAF-sensor) I've decided to live with it. But then again it might be not so bad as in your case. After about a 100mtrs (300ft) the car runs OK, so it's not worth spending lots of cash on it, without being sure it really solves the issue.

I hear you Onrust. Thank you for taking the time to write.
I am afraid that one day it wonr't start. It actually happened and that is why I changed the spark plugs and cylinder. It's still as bad as it's used to be. So I already waited the cash on something that it was (apparently) necessary at this time. Mine actually does not sound good most of the time. The rpm fluctuates even after driving teh car so long.

I replaced it after the tune up. I actually killed it trying to start.
I have changed battery last summer with used Volvo battery (no problem) and back in 2005 with die hard battery.

I would inspect any of the battery cable terminals or ends for corrosion. Corrosion or bad cables themselves can cause all sorts of weird things to happen and voltage drops across the entire car.

Thank you jablackburn,
I am assuming that I have to take it to a mechnic to do that because I have no clue how to do except visual inspection of the battery in my truck.

Thank you,
