Is there anyway of checking the ignition module? instead of just buying a new one and trying it?

Why do you want to buy a new ignition module? Is the car totally dead? Please give us mor info. Volvo has used to different brands of ignition modules, do you know what type you have.

it's a bosch if that helps.. car stalls.. then dies altogether for days until i start playing with module.. couple days ago taking wire off it and putting it back on got the car started.. then car died again until i took module off cleaned it and heatsink, sanded few spots and put it back on.. car's been working now.. if it dies again.. going to end up replacing it

Your description could have been written by me 5 years ago, I tried exactly the same things as you and had the same problem. If it is stalling when driving, you will notice that the tach meter is going straight to zero when it dies even if the engine is still rotating = no ignition .
I tried to do exactly the same things as you, to clean every connection, I even had plans to buy a brand new cable harness.
I am 90% shure that it is the Hall sensor in your case ( I would prefer to call it hell sensor).
Next time when the engine does not run, switch the ignition off. Just take out the connection to the ignition module and put it back 1/2 minute later, and it will run! It is magic and it is the Hall sensor if it helps. Then you know that you have to buy a new sensor. On the other hand, to have such an unreliable car is not nice, why don't you spend some extra dollars to buy a new Hall sensor and a new ignition module. It is rather wellknown that the module has it's problems too. I had to change that one year earlier.
