Re: Fan Motor for the Air Vent Is Really Loud

I had very limited funds when I had to replace my motor, and I found a unit on eBay for ~70 bucks which included the motor, fan blade and housing. It's doing well - the only issue I had was that the housing was about 5 mm too thick so it prevented me from reinstalling the glovebox properly. I wound up cutting a small notch out of the glovebox to make it fit. It wasn't a huge deal-breaker for me, and I can live with it.

I'm in the same boat you are. I even posted a question on here yesterday about FCP and blower motors. It seems they are about $75 cheaper than IPD. Others responded to my post with positive things to say about FCP plus if you use the coupon code "MVSCC" you apparently get 10% off. I'm going to order one from FCP tomorrow unless IPD can match the price.

Even if I buy OEM, FCP Groton is still cheaper so... the decision is easy. OEM from FCP is about as expensive as Aftermarket from IPD!

Here's an idea:

-Buy the cheaper aftermarket one from FCP.

-FCP has a lifetime warranty for every part they sell that is installed by an ASE certified technician, however...

-You can forgo the ASE-certified installation but still have the lifetime warranty if you pay 10% more.

So for the $95 blower motor, you'll pay $9.50 extra ($104.50 total) to have a lifetime warranty by installing it yourself. This is still way cheaper than the next alternative, and you can't really beat a lifetime gurantee for a product that is easy to access and install.
FCPGroton wrote:If the product is not installed by an ASE certified technician, FCP Groton does not provide a FREE limited lifetime warranty. FCP Groton does however provide the option of purchasing a limited lifetime warranty for non ASE certified individuals who plan to install the product themselves. The cost to purchase a limited lifetime warranty is 10% of the cost of the product. To purchase a limited lifetime warranty, please email [email protected]
If I'm misinterpreting their guidelines, let me know... but it makes sense to me.

Apparently the cabin air filter is really dirty. Which one do I buy?

I'll be installing the aftermarket one up here in Canada, so I dunno if that lifetime warranty will work. I'll ask FCP just in case.

Just use FCP's page to look up your car, then go to Filters > Cabin Air Filters.

The Genuine Volvo is a little more expensive but you know it will fit perfectly. I once bought an aftermarket one and I had to squish it to fit right. So I got rid of it and just bought a new Volvo one. If your filter is clogged to the point where little air can get through, that will put additional strain on the blower motor.

And yeah, I'd give them a call. I wouldn't think that location should make a difference...

Hm ok I'll buy the OEM one instead of the charcoal one. Don't want too many problems as we're going on vacation. I'll buy the genuine oil filters as well. Do the oil filters come with the gasket? My dad says a new gasket is required everytime you change the oil.

Yes, they do come with the o-ring gasket. I can tell you though that isn't necessary to change it every time, but since you get a new one with each filter, you might as well. Takes an extra 30 seconds to swap. I had one on for 15,000 miles (2 oil changes) and it still had the flex and integrity of a new one.

Ok got a problem. I only got some time on this PoS laptop so here's the problems.

1. LOTS of white air coming from the vents once the blower stops and I push the resistor to off. It stops after a minute or two.

2. Air is coming through from the vents even when I have the resistor set to off.

3. Blower doesn't work after I push it from off to auto. If I manually set the fan speed, the blower makes the huge annoying loud screeching sound as I described earlier. I think it's causing everything to screw up.

As I said in a couple posts earlier, I have an aftermarket blower and OEM cabin air filter coming in from FCP Groton. I just hope nothing else is failing.
