xeMODex ABS rebuild or OEM ABS unit?

Post by vailpass »

Hi All,
My 2003 XC70 ABS module has gone out and is sending codes galore. I even have a transmission code that the mechanic says could be due to the speedometer being thrown off due to the bad ABS module.
Kids go back to school Monday so need to fix the car now.

xeMODex will rebuild my ABS for $500 or I can go OEM for $1400. $900 is a lot of scratch right about now but I don't want to replace a bad part with another bad part.

Question: Would you feel confident going the rebuild route or would you only feel confident with OEM?

Thanks

If you are comfortable with taking it out, send it to Canada with FedEX. Reputation is that ExmodeX is really good. let them know about turnaround time.

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.

Thanks Klaus.
I'm not exactly comfortable with taking it out but for $1000 I'm going to do it. I've seen a couple of articles on removing the ABS module, any tips would be greatly appreciated. Will let you know how it turns out.

Send an Email to Xemodex asking for removal instructions, any fuses you should pull while the module is out of the car, and installation tips.
I have removed them from 850s, and the hardest part is to get the plug off and back on.

Asking xeMODex is a great idea, thanks very much Klaus.I wish I would have thought of that yesterday. I just called them, they are closed on Fridays during the summer. I need to take the unit out this weekend so it looks like no help from xeMODex. I'm going to find and E5 Torx socket over lunch today and try to remove the abs module tomorrow. Looks like I need to figure out how to move the air cleaner out of my way then figure out how to unsbolt the module without breaking anything.

Turns out a very helpful gentelman from xeMODex, Chris, was in today and helped me out with how to get the ABS module out.
Going to go at it tonight.

Turns out removing the ABS module is only slightly harder than changing a light bulb. Sending the module to xeMODex tomorrow, installing rebuild on Wednesday.

Hoping it works.

Installed the rebuilt ABS module. All signal lights are gone (ABS, Brake, Traction). Seems to be working fine.
Now I can figure out why I'm getting a Check Engine light and a Check Transmission message and why it is not shifting smoothly between 2nd and 3rd gear.
I'm thinking it isn't going to be good news.
