Can this be a do it yourself project or are special tools and knowledge needed. I got the feeling from a Volvo Service Dept that it a common problem

I did mine and it was easy and i pay only $38.00 for the part.

Could you walk me through the steps on how you replaced the door check?
Did you have to remove the door, and did you have to do any welding?

850 S/V/C 70 Noisy Door Hinge



With time the center door hinge, mainly on the front doors can crackle or pop when you open the doors. The worst case is the bracket that the 40mm torx screw fastens to, will need to be re-welded to the

Do I have to remove the interior door panel to replace the door check on my driver's side door? I have viewed the post on how to remove the panel--just need to know if the removal is necessary because viewing the picture of the door after the panel was removed, I don't see where the door check connects. (1997 Volvo 850, 4dr)

Yes, you most definitely need to remove the trim panel, as the new check strap has to go in from the inside. i did this myself recently and it was pretty straightforward.
