Knocking sound

Post by black mamba »

My 2001 V70 T5(Manual) has a knocking sound when in neutral that goes away when I engage the clutch.....any ideas on what this might be?

Thirty years ago we would have called it a thrust bearing in the clutch. A sign the clutch is wearing out, but not in the short term.

What he said, but it's called a throwout bearing.
Labor will be the same as installing a new clutch so you may as well bite the bullet and plan for a new clutch assembly soon
(depending on how loud it is)!
If it's just a subdued "whirring noise" it can wait, but if the noise is loud, plan on doing this sooner rather than later as the TB can fail, "just like that"

Thanks for the replies. The mechanic told me that it's not the throw-out bearing but that it's the release bearing. Hmmm.
