95 940 bell housing at starter hits underside of chassis

I'm putting in a new rear seal. When I try to pull out the transmission at the flywheel from the rear of the engine the small bump-out on the bell housing for the starter gear hits the underside of the chassis by a good 1 and 1/2 to 2 inches. What gives? The engine is supported from the top. Thanks. Clay

Did you try positioning the engine with the rear lower than the front?
