Need Help

Post by moosed »

Hi all,

Gave my sister my 2003 V70 for a few weeks while her SUV was being repaired. She called in a panic when the check engine light went on and it started to make a knocking/loud ticking noise, she quickly stopped the car and checked the oil(it was down 4 qts!!). Added the oil and limped home (about 2 miles).

I was able to hear the car today(she is about 70 miles from me) and it starts right up and yep there is a knocking/ticking noise. So what could have happened and does any recommend a good mechanic in or around New Windsor NY (Chips Volvo Repair is in Walden...any idea if he is good?). It ia a NA 5 speed with about 100K miles.

Tony

4 qts is not good at all
Is it missing or just making noise and is it lifter noise or bottom end noise?

Yes, change the oil and run it for awhile, it may clear up

4qts down and knocking is really bad...I'd tear down the oil filter and look for metal in it.

Ok maybe I can't tell where its coming from. Had it towed to a recommended repair shop in highland falls, ny and he thinks its a connecting rod bearing. He will drop the pan and take a look. What do you guys think? If it's early and the crank isn't scored this shouldn't be that bad a repair... also the knocking isn't constant, it knocks for a few seconds then not for a few seconds then knocks again.

Rod or rod bearing sound can come and go. I've heard a car running with a bent rod and the best I can describe it is "dieseling".

Did she get the oil changed at Jiffy Lube as a favor for borrowing the car? Those 10 minute places are notorious for forgetting the drain plug, oil filler cap or any other automotive horror you can think of.

Here is the bad news (real bad). It was/is a rod bearing and the mechanic feels that it the bottom end was that starved for oil there is most likely some top (cam, etc) damage that might show up latter. Recommends not rebuilding this engines (too costly) but getting a used engine and installing, with new timing belt (and related parts) new clutch and throw out bearing. This will have some type of warranty (12 months) and all this will be about 4K. What do you guys think?

Would I need to get the same year 2003, engine? This is a NA engine, can I get a turbo installed? The car itself is in great shape and I'm kinda debating on what to do.

If you could get $2-3k? for selling it as a parts car or mechanic's special, you could put that additional $4k you would've spent on the repair towards another '03 with lower miles. Spend less, while ending up with a lower miles equivalent. sorry about the bad news on the engine!

Find auto dismantlers in your area that specializes in volvos. We have one in San Diego and a used engine would run about
$1500. Try to go online and browse the web for dismantlers near ur place.
