94 850 stalls out when put in gear

Post by volvee850glt »

94 850 turbo starts fine idles fine in park or neutral but makes a rattling noise which i can't find exactly from where but sounds like from around where the tranny and engine come together. and as soon i put it gear any gear it dies. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Any codes to report?

Check your catalytic converter. It may have fallen apart and the chunks are clogging the exhaust. When you put it in gear, the increased RPM's may be causing the clog to create too much back pressure.

Take a rubber mallet and gently knock it. You may hear the chunks rattle around.

I've got 2 guesses:

1) Idle control valve is stuck/dead. You can try cleaning it or swapping in another.
2) Torque converter/solenoid is stuck in lock-up mode. This might go along with the noise you hear. The result is like leaving a manual car in gear as you come to a stop - it'll stall.

I actually talked to someone today that said it sounded like it was the torque converter solenoid. Where is this located?

It is under the oil pan on the front face of the transmission. Once the pan is off it is very easy to replace - getting the oil pan off is a major PITA. The suspect solenoid is referred to as "SL" but I don't know that we know that that is the problem yet. Have you pulled the codes from port A-1?

If so post them back.

If you have no codes I fear the torque converter shat itself but draining the transmission fluid would give a better clue to that bad thing (chunks of metal in the fluid = bad thing).

Nope I don't have a way to pull the codes because its stuck at my house until it runs again. The torque converter and solenoid from an 97 glt should both work on a 94 turbo right? if it is both of them

The car that is broken is the '94 isn't it - I am getting confused. All of the '94 models had the OBD-I port so where the car is shouldn't matter when it comes to reading codes.

Just use the ports by the windshield washer fluid filler to read them.

This is specific to port A-2 but it works the same if you plug the flywire into port A-1.

Oh ok I did not know about that. but all I got from a2 was 1-1-1 no failures.
And from A1 was 3-2-5 memory failure
But anyways I have the oil pan off, what exactly am I looking for?

You should see 3 solenoids there - I believe SL is the lower one, but I could be wrong. Test the resistance of all 3 to ground. If you see one with a resistance of 0, that solenoid has failed.

PS some of the early '94's use different solenoids than a 97 model, if you were planning on switching them.

Dang I believe it an earlier one because it still has the conical exhaust housing on the turbo which I still need to switch out so I can put my exhaust back on.
