I plan on draining and filling a few quarts of transmission fluid on my mom's 95' 850. I was wondering what kind of fluid I should use. I'm not sure if it's a 5 speed or 4 speed. Honestly, I don't really know what this means. I know there are 4 gear position on the lever: L, 2, 3, and D. Does that mean its a 4 speed?
I've done it once before and I used castrol multi-vehicle for imports. It states on the back it's compatible with toyota type IV, which I believe is the same type of fluid put in these cars, correct?
transmission fluid for an 850?

You're a bit mistaken on a few of your statements there. Go with Mobil-1 Synth ATF. Buy at least 4qts b/c about 3.5qts will come out.

the manual call for dexron iii or higher
i have a 4 speed auto tranny
since dexron iii is hard to find i used castrols dexron vi its a semi synth and backward compatible its not expensive and the tranny has been more than happy some other folks have used also mobil's version on the 4 speeds automatics dexron will do but on the five speeds auto ther is a more specific fluid
if you search quickly you will find threads the subject has been discussed a bunch
cheers !

Dex-III is not hard to find - Walmart, Advance, etc. have them. It doesn't matter too much what brand of the fluid you use.
It is best to NOT mix different fluids. If you are going about the drain and fill procedure for now, use standard Dex-III. If you are at the point where you want to do a complete flush, THEN you can switch to another type of fluid.
It's a 4-speed box. 3309 is for the 5-speeds, but it will not hurt it.

4 speed. Synthetic is good stuff, I run it in mine as well. But if you're doing a routine drain and fill to bring it back up to snuff instead of a full-out flush, just use Dex-III
