Loud ticking noise from engine - sometimes
Re: Loud ticking noise from engine - sometimes
Yes, fuel injectors do have an internal coil and do have one moving part, made of extremely hard stainless steel, knocking against extremely hard stainless stell. It is an electrically activated valve cycling several times a second. They do tick. Some more, some less.

I have a 99 S70GLT, 106K miles, which I bought new. Even when the car was new I heard a loud ticking or knocking sound coming from the engine at idle. I just assumed it was normal for this engine. No such sound from any other car I have owned.

IS YOUR OIL LOW???
I know ALOT of 850's that tend to *tick* when the oil gets low.
perhaps same for your S70?

The fuel injectors can be listened to with a mechanics stethoscope or uplugged one at a time to eliminate that problem. Then I would measure the oil pressure with a mechanical guage such as a Snap On or equivalant, next I would do a cylinder leak down test. Some of these tests will have to be done a pro technician, if the oil pressure is OK I would try using 20/50 Valvoline oil with an OE type filter. The cyl. leak down test will determine if a piston has a problem such as a broken piston ring or piston slap. You may also have a wrist pin problem which is rare or maybe at one time in the engines life, it had injested some water which won't compress and bent a connecting rod Volvo engines are well made and tough. Bad injector seals won't make noise and can be found with a can of carb cleaner is sprayed on them and the idle speed increases. Last but not least a broken or weak valve spring will make a noise that can come and go.

I know this is an old thread but it may be related to the problem I am having...
My 2001 non-turbo S60 has almost 110K miles. Lately (especially after timing belt replacement), I started noticing the ticking noise. It happens after idling for a while (usually in the morning, very rarely in the afternoon too) when the RPM starts approaching 3K. If I go easy on the pedal, the ticking noise will stop, then when I press on the pedal again, the noise usually goes away completely. (BTW, by ticking noise, I mean, the kind that you stick a piece of plastic into blades of the rotating window fan that's powered on...)
But sometimes I just wanted to test the limit and kept pressing on the pedal, the ticking noise would sustain for a while before it became too loud I had to stop on the pedal. Then the noise went away until the following morning.
At first I thought it was CV axle related (after googling), but after reading this thread, I think it might be it. My mechanic says it's related to a worn strut. But recently I had the strut mount replaced. He advised me to replace the strut. If the problem occurs only when RPM is ~3K after idling, I doubt it's the strut.
Any thoughts? Thanks a million.

Not trying to dredge up an old thread, but this is exactly what happened to our car today.dejongmc wrote: ↑13 Apr 2007, 13:23 Sometimes there is a loud ticking noice coming from the engine. Hard to locate exactly from which part of the engine.
I noticed it starts when the car is idling for a while.
All belts timing and serpentine) have recently been replaced. This noise was already there before the belts were replaced.
I also read here that is may be a fuel injector. Never knew these could make noise.
Does anybody know what this can be?

98 S70, MT, 172K... Car has only been run full synthetic since 157K. 75% of fill ups are Super. Stage 0. Car burns about a quart of oil every 2K miles.
Trying some Seafoam Transtune before swapping in a new power steering pump. Replaced some fluid put in a Transtune mixture in there and idled the car for about a half hour in the driveway. From minute 15-20 or so, I started to get a loud ticking sound from somewhere on top of the engine. It eventually went away, and afterwards, I did about a hundred miles of highway driving without a tick.
I'll keep an eye on this... It's way too cold to do an oil pan, o-ring job right now...
Anything I should keep an eye out for?
