Hi all,
I'm a new city, and headed to a new shop for repairs to my fuel pump and MAF. Both need to be replaced. As I'm always wary of a new shop and getting ripped off, I'm curious to know what that might run in parts and labor (generally speaking).
Looks like you can get the MAF from Autopartswarehouse for $147 and the fuel pump for $161. Are those accurate prices?
It almost looks like, from what I can see on the web that replacing the MAF is a pretty simple repair. Is that true?
Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

You will probably pay more then those prices for the parts if the mechanic gets them. See if he is willing to install them for you if you buy the parts.
As for the MAF, you could easily do that yourself. Should not take more then 10 minutes.
The fuel pump will be more work. If your car has the access door, it is not so bad and should not cost much in labor. If they need to drop the tank, that is going to cost more.

I'm curious. How do you know (or why do you think) they both need to be replaced? OBD2 codes? Another mechanic told you this? Is the engine hard to start? Does it run rough? I've never had to replace a MAF on either of my 850's or my wife's S70. I did have to replace the fuel pump on my 1996 850 at about 190k miles. I had to replace the fuel pressure regulator on my son's 1997 850 shortly after we purchased it with about 160k miles.headed to a new shop for repairs to my fuel pump and MAF. Both need to be replaced
There should not be any need to drop the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump. Open the trunk of the car and take out the whole trunk mat. Under that mat by the back seat on the right hand (passenger) side you will see 2 metal covers. The one with wires coming out closest to the side of the car is where the fuel pump is located. That cover comes off when you remove the 5 10 mm nuts. There are two "tricks" to replacing the fuel pump. To remove the two fuel lines on top of the pump, you have to lift up from the bottom and press down from the top of the plastic connectors at the end of the hoses. (Do not try and remove the hoses from the connectors.) The other trick is figuring out how to spin the large plastic ring with the fins counter-clockwise. I used an oil filter wrench. Once that ring is loose, the pump assembly pulls right out. Pump assemblies are more like $400 from what I have seen and read on this site. Once the pump assembly is out, it is possible to reuse part of the assembly and replace just the pump. I pulled the whole fuel pump assembly out of an 850 in the junkyard and used that to get back on the road without spending a lot of money. (Plus the $60 tow home from where the car quit. My car was running fine when I pulled into a gas station and filled up. Then it would not start. No fuel pressure and 190k miles, led me to think fuel pump.)

Of all the things you can replace on our cars the MAF ranks right up there as one of the easiest. To give you a comparison my mechanic wanted $250 to replace my MAF and you can buy them for around $160, or $50 used. I bought a used one.

About 3500 miles ago I replaced the MAF in our '98 T5 with this for $120. Not 100% sure if it is compatible with your T5R 850, so please check

Car has run like like a champ since. The old MAF was completely hosed, car was undrivable.
Its as easy as
pulling the connector
loosen two hose clamps
pull the sensor out
put new one in
tighten hose clamps
connect connector
wrap a cable tie around the wire..
What codes/symptoms are you getting? Often the connecor contacts get a little corroded on the MAF and its just a case of cleaning them with contact cleaner.

We used a Bosch fuel pump in our 1997 850R. It was not as easy as the MAF to change, but there is a very good tutorial on this board. Check it out. Ours cost $259 from Bap-Geon. The pump is separate from the fuel sensor in our model.
