How do I tell what audio system & speakers I have?

I have a 2004 XC90 2.5 AWD. When I turn the stereo on, it tells me I have "Premium Audio" with Dolby Pro Logic, and I have the rear controls.

Is this the 12 speaker package? What about the subwoofer - it looks like that is a separate option.

I found a list of available options here but according to that page, for the 2.5T to have the premium audio it also would have to have the 18" wheels (it has 17") and the retractable mirrors (there's only one button in the console, for the DSTC).

This is the official Volvo spec sheet.

The premium package for the 2.5T does not include 18" wheels. That is in the T6 package.

If you have Power Glass Moonroof; Leather Seating Surfaces; Power Adjustable Passenger Seat, 8-Way with Lumbar Support; In-Dash 6-CD Changer, Auto-Dim Rearview Mirror; Power-Adjustable Heated Exterior Rearview Mirrors with Memory Function and Homelink Remote Garage Door Opener the car has had the Premium package installed and for a further $775, 2004 price, the audio system will be the Premium.

I'm thinking that perhaps they had different options for Canada?

I have all the options you list except for the 6-CD changer - at least, I couldn't find a way to get it to take a 2nd disk. Maybe I'll have to try again.

I actually stopped by the local Volvo dealer today, and according to their computer, the options on the car include the premium sound, auto dim rear view mirror, homelink, power seats driver/passenger, red walnut wood inlays and tinted rear glass.

Hi

I have a 2010 S40 with the Premium so I'm not sure if this helps you but Premium on this model consists of twelve speakers and this does not include a subwoofer.
Rear doors = Two midrange and two tweeters.
Front = Two bass, two mid range and two tweeters (mounted same height in moulded modules - in line with the wing mirrors).
Centre = One mid range speaker in the centre of the dash with a treble speaker above it so they only take one speaker space.

You should be able to scroll through the Menu settings to find Audio Settings which will give you Stereo, Three Channel and Pro Logic. Also with the premium is a graphic equaliser for front and rear ( on top of standard bass and treble setting on the main waterfall unit)
I don't use the pro logic as its simply not loud enough and to be honest the centre speaker adds quite a harsh frequency to the mix when engaged so I dont use it at all, or if i do, it's only on low setting to add some ambience - but to be honest, the ten speakers in the doors are ambient enough.

Be advised though that although it is certainly a very good system, it's volume is dependant on the volume of the CD, MP3 or Aux you play.
Obvious thing to say but all of these media are mastered at widely differing levels of volume and therefore will not push this system to its full potential and even at full volume, a lot of CD's will not actually sound really loud, certainly not pushing out the RMS this system has to offer.

Same as Mp3s, they are encoded to prevent clipping usually at 89db which won't even start to annoy this stereo and you may have to recode them at a higher Db to make the audio really sing.

That said, when you have the Graphic set right and a nicely mastered CD, this system is very, very nice.

I'd love a sub installed to bring out some true low end definition but as a OEM fitting it's one of the best I've heard.

Premium indeed.
