Wasn't paying attention and realized I was running out of gas when I felt car sputtering. After I got gas it took about 1/4 mile for it to stop sputtering. I then noticed the check engine light was on. Pulled over a couple of minutes later and shut off the car and let it cool down. After starting the car several times and the light still being on I drove home 10 min. Can running low on fuel cause the check engine to trigger ? And how do you reset the light ?
Thanks,
Bob

The CEL could be on because of the sputtering (misfire perhaps). Take it to an AutoZone or somewhere where they read codes for free and they'll tell you the code which you can look up here.
For about $50 you could also buy yourself your own code reader, allowing you to read and delete (turn off CEL) codes. It's a very useful tool to have, considering many shops and the dealer charge a lot of money just to read the code! If you do decide to go this route, Amazon.com has some great deals. Be sure to use Matthew's link in the thread at the top of the thread list.
As a last tip, try not to run low on gas like that. It can be pretty hard on the fuel pump which is cooled by the gasoline. Personally, I always like to try and stay over 1/4 tank.
I hope everything works out for you!
