considering buying a 2003 v70 2.4 anything to look out for
I am considering buying a 2003 v70 2.3. I have owned a 2004 until it was hit and totaled. I have a volvo mechanic I half trust. I am concerned about the sound of gears shifting when you are stationary and just shifting from park reverse, drive the delayed bit of clunk almost.. not really a clunk just a sound.. MY old 2004 had this problem and the car was under warranty and the dealer replaced both the transmission and the front axels free.. no more sound this car I do not know how it has been cared for and the transmission fluid is very dirty. I plan to take it to another shop today and pay once again to have a second opinion.. I know the 2000 thru 2002 had trans problems. This car has 111,000. and I know it will need a timing belt and some reconditioning yet I am willing to do if it checks out today. Does anyone have any suggestions or warnings for me. I am a female and doing this nightmare all alone while without a vehicle going out everyday trying to find one that is reliable and will give me another 100,000 miles. I have always taken care of my cars and had 2 Volvos right about now wishing I had my precious great 240 still...Thank you for any assistance. Alice
With that kind of mileage, proper maintainence is EVERYTHING!!! Dirty tranny fluid is not an auspicious sign at all, the shift issue you describe could be as simple as flushing the tranny with fresh fluid. But, if never flushed before, a lot of people are hesitant to flush at this mileage for fear that further problems will be created.
If I couldn't get this car blessed by an IM that I fully trusted, I would be very hesitant to choose this car. What is the asking price?
Good luck.

Alice, I love Volvos but I suggest you stay away from this one and volvos in general if you are looking for reliability and low cost maintenance.
BUT If you really would like a volvo wagon, go thru JRL. He buys clean volvos at auction and he can get you a nice well maintained one for a reasonable price.

I have a 03, V70 2.4T I like it a lot, my trans is servo slipping..
I would not buy a AWD. Take it to a Volvo dealer pay 90.00 and see whats needed. BTW @ 90K ALL fluids should have been replaced, a GOOD mech and read a spark plug, Struts and assembly ? mounts? Good luck..BEST! carfax and the Volvo dealer has a history report?
