1989 760 gle rear window

Post by amber »

Hi there, I have just got my first Volvo, it is immaculate, the only problem is the rear window on the passengers side, I can't close it. Can anyone tell me how to get the door panel off, I have tried but something seems to be stopping it.

Thanks.

Amber.

Hi Amber:

So your rear passenger door window won't go up. I had a similar problem with my 1986 740 GLE when I bought it last year.

I am assuming that your car has power windows (electric motor driven). I have yet to see one of these cars with crank windows.

Removing the door panel is very easy. Here is the step-by-step:

On the bottom edge of the door panel (best viewed when laying on the ground and looking straight up) you will see three clips. Remove these white plastic clips by prying out with a screwdriver.

On the rear edge of the panel you will see the red safety light. Remove the lense by prying off with a screwdriver. Inside you will see the fourth white plastic clip, like the ones on the bottom. Remove this one as well.

Pry off the speaker grill on the door panel. Under the speaker grill is a single phillips head screw. Remove this screw.

The inside door knob has a rubber plug on the top. Pry out this plug and unscrew the screw. Then remove the knob.

Inside the hand grip well, to the rear of the knob, you will see what looks like a round plastic screw head with a slot. Insert a straight blade screwdriver and twist 1/4 turn.

Unscrew the door lock knob from the threaded post at the top of the door panel.

You should now be able to remove the door panel.

When I purchased my car, the power window in one rear door would go down as designed. But when you tried to put it up, the motor would turn, but you would hear a rhythmic knocking sound and the window would remain in place. You could get the window up by pulling on the glass when someone had a finger on the switch. But as you drove the car, the window would start to fall down slowly on its own.

I ended up replacing the entire window regulator mechanism, which included a new motor. The Volvo Dealer quote was $497 for the assembly. I purchased the same new mechanism from an independent Volvo parts supplier for $200. Did all the installation myself.

Please let me know the symtoms of your faulty window and I should be able to talk you through the repair. Keep us posted on your progress.
