2001 V70 T5 with scraping / clicking sound on corners

Post by BreeSteph »

I apologize if there is a similar topic elsewhere that may have covered this, and if there is, I would love to be forwarded to it.

I have a 2001 V70 T5 - geartronic auto trans. with roughly 130k miles on the clock, roughly 30k of which I have put on it over the past year and a half since I purchased it. At about 120k, I had a single instance of the car lurching forward when stopped and shortly after, the service transmission light came on. I took it in and was told that there was an error in the software for the transmission and that the best remedy was to update the software and do a transmission flush. These seemed to remedy the problem.

Roughly 2 months later, during the winter months, I began to notice a very distinct and audible clicking and possibly slight scraping sound when I took corners, primarily on ice or snow. This would primarily only happen at low speeds (10 - 20mph) and only when I was taking corners. While this noise was occurring, I would notice a significant loss of traction and power at the wheels, and the stability traction control light would flicker on and off during the time that the vehicle was making the noise.

My question is to just hear your thoughts on what it might be. I thought it may be the CV axles or joints because it only occurs when I'm turning, but at the same time, from what I have read, the STC only senses a change within the gearbox, and not at the wheels themselves.

I realize its more than likely going to be an expensive fix regardless, but I'm hoping it is not the the entire gearbox... any help or input would be greatly appreciated.

That'll be the traction control cutting throttle and applying brakes in order to stop you losing control. This is 100% normal. If you want to stop this happening, you can press and hold the STC button to turn the feature off. If these symptoms exist on dry & smooth pavement as well, then you may have a problem.
However, it is routinely mentioned on all Volvo forums that you should have the transmission serviced every 30-40k. If the transmission has already been on a 30k mile flush interval since new, then by all means take her in and have it flushed. If you have no information on the matter, then drain and fill procedure is best. I'm sure that other members will chime in with their experiences as well.

I've noticed the lurching occasionally also but no light to match.
I was playing with my 'new' '01 in the snow this past winter and noticed the scraping sound also. If you hold the STC button for a couple seconds the light will go out and the traction control is not on. Working on Ag equipment as I do at work, I thought of this as an over-running clutch. I'm sure it's a wee more complicated than that. Mostly an annoying sound when accelerating in the snow.
Noticably loud clicking or popping sounds might indicate a CV joint. Check the CV boots for tears and crud. They wont leave you stranded unless they fail catastrophically which is not likely. If intact they last almost the life of the car.
I've put 30k on mine since I got it 18 months ago. I really dig this car. 210,000mi so far.
